Contact Lenses

The History and Development of Contact Lenses

Contact Lenses allow you to be free from the physical downsides of having glasses, such as that of breaking them or having them fall off while jogging or doing other sports, this is why the companys manufacturing the lenses are continuing to improve the materials and technology they use to create the products. this enables us to provide you with the most up-to-date, comfortable contacts possible.

Origionally, contact lenses were made from glass, however, they were not very practical or comfortable and irritation of the eye was common. PMMA (Perspex) was the next material to be used, this was a revolution in the history of contact lenses, unfortunately they were not perfect, as oxygen could not access the eye very easily, these became known as ‘hard’ contacts.

Through the 1970′s , 80′s and 90′s, the rigid lenses became gas-permeable, becoming known as ‘RGP’ lenses. This allowed those who need to use Rigid lenses (because they do not absorb fumes), such as painters or others working with chemicls to have the comfort of oxygen reaching the eye while the contacts are being worn.

Otto wichterle was the first to produce ‘soft’ contact lenses (used the most frequently today) in 1960 made from a hydrogel called polymacon, which over the years has evolved and become more gas permeable and the structure of the polymers has been changed.

The most recent material to be used is silicone hydrogel, which allows high levels of oxygen to get into the eye, aswell as making the lens hydrophilic.
